Tragelaphus angasi is a species of antelope also known as the giant eland. It belongs to the genus Tragelaphus, which consists of several large African antelope species. The giant eland is native to the savannahs and woodlands of West and Central Africa.
This species is characterized by its massive size, exceeding most other antelope species. Males can weigh up to 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) and stand over 1.7 meters (5.6 feet) tall at the shoulder. It has a distinctive appearance, with a pale tan or gray coat adorned with narrow horizontal white stripes. Both males and females have long, spiraled, and impressive horns.
Tragelaphus angasi is a herbivorous species, primarily feeding on grasses and leaves, and its large size allows it to reach otherwise inaccessible food sources. These antelopes are capable of traveling long distances in search of water and vegetation.
Being primarily diurnal, the giant eland is active during the daytime, forming small herds or larger groups of up to 60 individuals. They are known for their agility and speed, capable of running at speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour (43 miles per hour) when threatened.
Due to habitat loss, hunting, and poaching, the giant eland population has significantly declined over the years, classifying it as a vulnerable species. Conservation efforts are being undertaken to protect its remaining habitats and ensure the survival of this magnificent African antelope.
