Tepees, also spelled as teepees, are cone-shaped structures that serve as portable and temporary shelters historically used by various Native American tribes of the plains regions. The word "tepee" originates from the Lakota Sioux term "thipi," which means dwelling or house.
Tepees are constructed using a framework of long, sturdy poles that are typically made from wood or bamboo. These poles are gathered at the top and bound together to form a conical shape, with the base usually measuring around 14 to 20 feet in diameter. The exterior of the tepee is covered with animal hides, usually buffalo or elk, which are secured to the frame using ropes or hide thongs.
One of the key features of tepees is their ability to be disassembled and moved easily, making them ideal for the nomadic lifestyle of the Native American tribes. The poles can be carried on horseback, and the hides folded and packed for transportation. This mobility allowed tribes to migrate frequently in search of food, water, and better hunting grounds.
Inside the tepee, a central fire pit is often present, providing warmth and a place for cooking. Smoke is vented through a small opening at the top called a smoke hole. The interior is divided into different sections for various purposes, such as sleeping, cooking, and storage.
Tepees are an iconic symbol of the Native American culture and have become associated with their way of life, especially the tribes of the Great Plains. Today, tepees are still used for ceremonial purposes, cultural events, and occasionally in recreational camping.
