Lycopodiophyta is a group that encompasses various plants commonly referred to as lycophytes or lycopods, which have a close evolutionary relationship to ferns and extinct plants that thrived during the Paleozoic era.
Lycopsida is characterized by their small to medium-sized stature, typically reaching a few centimeters to meters in height. They have branching, upright stems covered in scale-like leaves. Additionally, lycopods reproduce through the production of spores, which are dispersed by the wind to develop into new plants.
During their heyday, lycopsids were incredibly abundant and diverse, dominating large areas of ancient forests during the Carboniferous period, around 358 to 298 million years ago.
